Robotics is changing the Agricultural Sector

Robotics has increased productivity while reducing costs for manufacturers as they are able to work overnight which means they can work for a long period of time. Self-driving tractors are an example of using robotics in the agricultural sector, they are being used to follow the directions provided via GPS in order to provide basic services like weeding.


In addition to robots wedding, there are other robots used in agriculture and new robots are in development every day to make completing tasks as efficient as possible. There are 7 types of robots that are most often used in fields today:

Robots for Precision Agriculture: these robots are generally used by small farms to monitor photosynthetic activity, soil respiration and other biological factors to optimise the conditions for plant growth.


Robots for Pollution Monitoring: these robots can measure carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions which helps farmers to reduce their impact on the environment.

Robots for Livestock Ranching: these robots can herd livestock on large ranches as well as monitoring the animals to ensure they are healthy with enough area to graze.


Robots for Nursery Automation: these robots are often used in crop nurseries where they move plants around large greenhouses. They increase productivity as there is a labour shortage in crop nurseries.

Robots for Crop Harvesting: these robots are extremely quick at harvesting crops and sometimes even doing as much work as 30 workers - this makes them ideal when fast harvesting is needed.

Robots for Fruit Harvesting: these robots have advanced vision systems to identify fruits suitable for harvesting and grasp them without damaging them.


Robots for Planting and Seeding: these robots have 3D vision systems which can accurately plant and seed crops for optimal growth, generally used for lettuce farming and vineyards.
